WOMEN & GIRLS BEHAVIOR
We are so anxious to prove that we are equal with the opposit sex I often wonder if we have forgotten we are the opposit sex. I like being the opposit sex, in fact I would not have it any other way. But just for this column I will talk about the down side of being a female with ADD or ADHD.
Unfortunately for years the majority of research has been conducted on young first and second year college male college students. The results generally were said to reflect both males and females. Now, of course we know those results were not accurate as it relates to females.
Today because we have had more and more research conducted using females we have more accurate information. We are not now using results that reflect male behavior patterns as a guideline to judge or measure female behavior.
We have discovered the majorty of females who have ADD or ADHD behaviors are often much more suttle than the males. In the past if the young girls behavior was not extreme the ADD/ADHD diagnosis would most likely be missed.
So Mom when you are deciding your daughter does not have ADD or ADHD ask yourself, who's behavior are you measuring her against? Girls with ADHD are more likely to have attention problems but they usually do not disrupt the class which adds to them seldome being diagnosed as soon as boys.
